  1. These are fragile, unspoilt natural places and we share them only with guests who will treat them with care.
  2. Do not geotag on Google Maps or share their locations on social media. You can tag them as Raan Guhagar, or simply as somewhere in Maharashtra or India.
  3. No consumption of anything except drinking water is allowed at any of these spots or on the trails.
  4. Respect local communities and wildlife.
  5. There are no medical facilities like you have in the cities nearby. Follow your instincts and do not take unnecessary risks. You visit entirely at your own risk.

Waterfalls & swimming holes

7 spots

Three rules for every waterfall: (1) Do not geotag or share the location on social media. (2) No food, cigarettes, alcohol or drugs near the water, even if locals or other tourists around you are doing it. (3) There are no medical facilities anywhere nearby, so follow your survival instincts and do not do anything risky.

If it's raining heavily, the water looks brown, or the flow looks too strong, do not enter. You visit at your own risk and Raan Guhagar is not liable for any incidents or accidents at any water body.

We have lifejackets to borrow for free, ask at the reception before you head out.

We recommend hiring one of our autorickshaw partners instead of taking your own vehicle. They know these spots well and the roads can be tricky.

Forest pond 1

This is the easiest to get to as the road is right next to the waterfall and you can drive there directly. There is a concrete dam which creates two tiers, the lower tier about 4 to 5 feet deep and the upper tier 6 to 7 feet deep. The bottom of the upper tier is usually muddy and full of leaves so be careful while walking around. It is one of the best places to swim in Guhagar, with a 100 metre plus length of clean clear water. This pond runs out of water as soon as the rains end, so you can only visit it till October. You may find local boys drinking beer in and around the waterfall, especially the lower tier, post noon, so our recommended visit time is in the morning before breakfast.

Forest pond 2

This is one of the prettiest natural ponds, with two natural rock pools. The first one is about 10 to 12 feet deep while the second is about 18 to 20 feet deep. Once you arrive at the parking lot you will see a board for a temple. Go down the steps and you will see a concrete dam with clear water. Do not enter this, it is drinking water for the village downstream. Take a left and go downstream, keeping the flowing water to your right. Go slowly and carefully on the big boulders as they are slippery. Keep going down and you will see the first pond. Go down via the left, do not cross the water, and descend between the bamboos to reach it. This is where you can keep your things and enter the pond. Note that there are tiny fish in the water that can bite your dead skin, this is harmless. The middle of the pond is quite deep, so only enter if you are a good swimmer or are comfortable with a life jacket and know how to wear it correctly, with all straps and harnesses. The second pond is further downstream and requires serious rock climbing skills to get to. Only go if you are athletic and know how to swim.

Forest pond 3

This one is hard to reach and is not recommended in the monsoon as there is a lot of flow. Visit from October to December, or whenever the flow is low. Get to Kumbhavne village, do not park in the middle as you will block the ST bus from turning, and trek down through dense jungle to the river. There are a couple of big waterfalls and then a big pond downstream. It is very slippery and hard to reach, so go with extreme caution. The water is not very deep, but is deeper on the side of the waterfall, around 8 to 10 feet at its deepest.

Forest pond 4

This is a bit hard to reach but one of the most scenic waterfalls. Park near the TV tower on the rocky laterite plateau and trek 20 to 25 minutes across the lateritic plateau to reach this stunning waterfall with 7 layers.

Forest waterfall 1

This one is in our very own Are village, just a short 10 minute walk from Raan. Use the map link to get to the spot where you go off the road. You will find yourself at the Ganpati Idol Workshop (Kharkhana) where you will see a run down Wagon R parked on the road. From there, instead of going up along the tar road, go along the mud trail for another 10 minutes to find this pretty waterfall.

Forest waterfall 2

This one is right before Baug Beach. It has now been concretised and converted into a concrete dam of sorts. Protip: you can climb up the waterfall, only for those who are super athletic, and find a mini infinity pool with a sea view.

Forest waterfall 3

A huge 100 feet waterfall falling from the lateritic plateau (kaatal). Not recommended in heavy rains. There is a winding trail to go down to the waterfall. Do not go down from the temple side. You have to go down from the right side of the water, keeping the waterfall to your left.
