Raan in Marathi, our local language, means wild – a word that has unfairly gained a negative connotation of being out of place, unusual or even uncivilised. This is because we humans have started seeing ourselves as separate from the wild. We wish to bridge this very gap by experimenting, observing and re-building a sustainable way of life within the wild, without abandoning a few modern comforts we have come to live with.
Further, we facilitate an exchange of traditional knowledge with those who seek it. We believe that sustainable ecotourism practices will help in the conservation and revival of the Konkan’s natural splendours and cultural legacy, while also creating economic opportunities in a region suffering from widespread urban migration.

Experience

Food
Our home kitchen is handled by local women from the village who make delicious local food, snacks and beverages for you.
- Food and beverages are not included in any of our stay prices.
- We are normally able to cater to most dietary requirements.
- Food is priced differently for each meal. As a reference, we charge ₹220 for a full vegetarian thali.
- There is generally only one vegetarian and one non vegetarian option per meal. All meals need to be pre-ordered with our reception team. If you are checking in and you will be there for lunch or dinner on that day you can message us to place your order beforehand.
- Instant or packaged food and beverages are not offered or allowed on the property to maintain our eco-friendly environment.
- Guhagar market which is 4 km away has several other food options.
- We do not offer room service or allow food to be eaten in the room.
Breakfast is served between 8.30 am and 10.00 am, lunch is served between 1.00 pm and 2.30 pm while dinner is served between 7.30 pm and 9.00 pm.
Stay
Raan Guhagar is a nature and adventure centric backpacker hostel. We are not a resort, hotel or a private villa. If you are looking at just another place to consume alcohol or have a party, we are not the right place to book. We are primarily set up for solo travellers, backpackers, workcationers and those seeking to reconnect with nature and themselves in a calm and quiet setting.
We share the land with a lot of wild birds, reptiles, trees, and a river. Because of this, we follow certain norms to maintain the sanctity and serenity of the land and the forest.
- We do not use single-use plastic in our space. Please do not bring chips, biscuits, soft drinks or other such packaged products.
- We do not allow alcohol or smoking on the property. There is a bar close by you can walk to with a beautiful sea view.
- We do not allow any music on loudspeakers in this space. You are welcome to play an instrument or sing before 10 pm in the common space with the consent of fellow guests.
- All our rooms, dorms and common spaces are non-airconditioned. Temperatures are naturally cooler in our property due to the river and dense forest – it stays cool even in the peak of summer!
- Children under 18 years of age are not allowed at Raan, even in the private rooms.
- We do not allow big groups, the maximum group size is 6 individuals.
- Check in time is 12 pm and check out time is 10 am.
As of May 2025, our swimming pool is also ready! Please carry proper swim gear for entering the pool.
6 Bed Mixed Dormitory
We have a total of three 6 bed mixed dormitories, surrounded by views of nature and the river. There is an attached toilet and hot water shower inside each dormitory. Each bed has a locker and a personal fan and charging point. You will have to get your own padlocks to lock your belongings.
Please note if you come in a group we will not assign you one entire dorm and you may be split into different dorm rooms.
The minimum age to stay in our dormitory room is 18. We have a minimum 2 night stay policy for our 6 bed mixed dormitory (3 nights on long weekends and peak season). Due to potential conflicts with wildlife, pets are not allowed. All our rooms are no smoking rooms.

6 Bed Female Dormitory
This is a well ventilated 6 bed female-only dormitory, surrounded by views of nature and the river. There is an attached toilet and hot water shower inside the dormitory. Each bed has a locker and a personal fan and charging point. You will have to get your own padlocks to lock your belongings.

Jungle Cabins
Our two person jungle cabins with private attached washrooms are cosy rooms built with reused teakwood beds, doors and frames. Each cabin features a small verandah, a semi-open passage with a wash basin and an attached washroom with a hot water shower & western WC. The rooms are completely insulated from the elements and have a traditional mangalore tiled roof. Sit on your own small verandah and work, observe the different types of birds or enjoy the afternoon sea breeze.
The minimum age to stay in our cabins is 18. We have a minimum 2 night stay policy for our jungle cabins (3 nights on long weekends and peak season). Due to potential conflicts with wildlife, pets are not allowed. All our rooms are no smoking rooms.
(Please note these rooms are tiny – about 130 sq ft including the passage and the washroom. If you would like a larger living space the jungle cottage may be more suitable for you.)

Getting here
Chiplun, 50 km / 1 hour away is the nearest railway station. Chiplun is directly connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala via comfortable super-fast trains.
There are private autorickshaws available from Chiplun to Guhagar as well as state transport buses throughout the day at hourly intervals.
If you take a direct autorickshaw (₹1400) you can exit from platform 1 side at Chiplun Railway Station and mention Are Village to them, while following Google Maps to reach us.
If you take the bus option, you have to take an autorickshaw from Chiplun Railway Station to Chiplun Bus Stand, and take a bus (₹70) from Chiplun all the way to Guhagar Bus Stand. At Chiplun station, get off from the platform 2 end, it is much shorter from there to Chiplun Bus Stand. We are located 4 km from Guhagar Bus Stand. From Guhagar Bus Stand you will have to take an autorickshaw (₹150) to reach our gate. You can mention Raan Guhagar in Are village to the autorickshaw.
There are multiple private overnight buses from Mumbai and Pune directly to Guhagar.
From Mumbai, Shree Sunkai Travels and Pimpleshwar Travels are two such private operators.
You can check bus timings and availability online on Redbus.
You can choose your drop off point as Guhagar and inform the bus driver you would like to get down at Are Baji Road. We are just a 10 min walk from Are Baji Road. If you have a lot of bags we can help you hire a rickshaw as well.
There are also MRSTC buses that ply from major cities in Maharashtra to Guhagar.
Raan Guhagar is about 260 km / 6-hour drive from Mumbai, 230 km / 5-hour drive from Pune or 290 km / 5-hour drive from North Goa.
There is ample car parking in and around our site. Please note we do not offer any special accommodation for car drivers, you will have to book stay for them at our place or elsewhere.
Mumbai, Goa and Pune airports are all fairly equidistant from Raan Guhagar.

Please let us know when we contact you one day prior to your arrival that you will need an early check in. If there is availability we will offer it to you free of cost. If not you will need to wait until the room or bed is vacated and cleaned.
Slow travel is a form of travel where one spends time connecting with the culture and nature of a destination over multiple days, truly immersing oneself into the region. As Raan Guhagar is a slow travel space we do not allow short stays of one night. We have a minimum requirement of 2 nights (3 nights on long weekends and peak season).
Our jungle cabins and jungle cottages are cosy rooms designed for two people and there is no possibility to add extra bedding. If you are 3 you can look at the dormitory rooms or take multiple rooms.
No, we are not a weekend getaway or a place to come and party on Saturday night. Weekend tourism has severely impacted places in Maharashtra with extreme overcrowding and we are trying to find a solution to this via sustainable tourism. We urge you to come for a longer time or during the week whenever you have the free time. We also have high speed wifi if your work allows you to work remotely.
We have really good Jio and Vodafone network here while Airtel doesn’t work well. We also have power backup and hi-speed wifi all over the site.
Our dormitory is designed for solo travellers, nature lovers and most importantly – to make friends with other people! It is not designed for large groups. We only allow a max of 6 individuals from one group at Raan Guhagar, and if the mixed dorm is booked by all 6 we will not allot you your own private dorm.
While we do not have an upper age limit (we do have a minimum age requirement of 18), Raan Guhagar may not be well suited for elderly people with physical issues as we have a strong emphasis on adventure and there is a lot of walking on the property itself. The dorms generally have a younger crowd and also have bunk beds so the private cottages might be better for them. That being said, if they are fit and excited about our concept, they will love Raan Guhagar, especially our simple homely food which is sure to invoke nostalgia!

No, pets are not allowed in any part of Raan Guhagar. This is due to conflict with wildlife as pets either tend to attack birds, geckos and other small creatures or attract predators such as leopards.
– If cancelled one week prior to your arrival date, we will charge 25% of the total cost of your reservation and refund the remaining.
– If cancelled within one week from your arrival date, we will not be able to refund any of the advance amount back to you.
